Focal Sopra No. 3

In today’s edition of Ray’s Blind Review, I have a treat for you. I will be discussing Focal’s Sopra No. 3, a truly remarkable set of speakers. Not only do look great, the sound is next level amazing making these high end speakers an audiophile’s dream.

Focal isn’t your average speaker company and in France where they are based these speakers are considered a cultural product and they make a statement. Their mission is to create Dimension, Beauty and Reliability for every speaker they make from the basic entry level products to the top models. Focal states that “We at Focal strive to create sound equipment that honours the artist’s musical creation and empowers you to feel a new dimension of the music.

We’ll start with the craftsmanship of these speakers. The cabinet building facility is located in Bourbon-Lancy in Burgundy, France. The Sopra’s use a 69mm Sandwich front panel just like the Utopia’s do. This panel uses the same principle as Gamma Structure to give the cabinet inertia and damping.
The panel’s density gives it the inertia necessary to provide a stable mechanical reference for optimal definition. The inside of the cabinet has a unique design, there are no parallel side panels and small Helmholtz resonators have been added to the lower section to prevent vertical standing waves.

Focal uses TMD or Tuned Mass Damper a technology that is at the forefront for earthquake technology to increase the suspension in skyscrapers and to create suspension in racing cars.It creates homogeneity between the midrange and the tweeter resulting in a smooth sound. Think of this like a skyscraper in an earthquake, the building moves but many times doesn’t fall. The speaker cone moves but won’t break up the sound just like a skyscraper.

These phenomenal speakers is that you will experience the purest sound of every beat, chord and tone with these speakers and your will finally sound like it should. the Sopra 3. Finally, the incredible tweeter in the Sopra 3’s deserves mentioning. Focal’s speakers have always been known for their inverted dome and this tweeter dome is constructed of an element called Beryllium, a material that covers a span of five octaves 1000 Hz-40KH
This feature is important because the human ear can only hear up to 20KHZ and the Beryllium tweeter can go past this making even subtle advances sound, better Additionally it is 7 times more rigid than that of Titanium or Aluminum allowing the tweeter to produce sound waves that create the perfect sound and while incredibly useful it is expensive and therefore only found in Focal’s high end line, this isn't just a speaker its a statement of technology.

Focal uses IHL or Infinite Horn Loading a concept only used in the Spora line. Most of the cabinet must be used for the bass response of the speakers yet Focal had to find a way to get optimal sound out of the tweeter using much less space and thus a unique system was developed to solve this problem. The Beryllium tweeter is loaded through a small cavity which connects to the exterior of the cabinet by a horn. Focal fills the inside of the horn with a damping material. The soundwaves from the rear of the tweeter are absorbed.
While they come with a hefty $20,000 price tag, the sounds you will experience is just about worth it.You will hear every instrument, beat drop and the actual range of some insane vocals. Finally music will sound like it should crystal clear and pure, the Sopra 3 isn't just a speaker its a statement piece.
